For BMW M enthusiasts worldwide, 2012 marked a significant milestone–the 40th anniversary of BMW M Power. BMW consolidated its motor racing activities under a new company, BMW Motorsport GmbH, in 1972. The former racing driver and team boss, Jochen Neerpasch, led the wholly-owned BMW subsidiary to become a successful race team and brand, earning BMW numerous triumphs in motorsport over the following decades.

BMW Motorsport began racing with a BMW 3.0 CSL Coupe, the division’s first developed model, and the first to sport the renowned blue, violet, and red team colors. The division was soon commissioned to build sporty road cars, starting with the iconic BMW M1 supercar.

Introduced in 1978, this model established a legacy that characterizes BMW M cars to this day. By the early 1990s, the BMW subsidiary’s broadened range of activities prompted a new company name, encompassing BMW M cars, BMW Individual vehicle customization, and BMW Driver Training. Hence, BMW M GmbH was established in 1993.

Today, BMW M offers more models than ever before, with a new line of M Performance models and accessories, enabling greater access to the brand’s offerings. We anticipate BMW M’s future developments, including the potential successor to the M1 supercar.
